The people of Akwukwu-Igbo Community in Oshimili North local Government Area, Delta State has said, arrested suspected assailants of police officer at Akwukwu-Igbo are not indigenes of the community.
The President General of Akwukwu-Igbo Developement Union, ADU, Chief Ikechukwu Iwegbu, in a media chat with our correspondent debunked the claim that one of the suspected assailants is an indigene of the community.
Chieft Iwegbu alongside Pastor Ben Kachikwu and Mr. Agbagwu Christian, all members of ADU, lamented the killing of a police officer at Akwukwu-Igbo who alongside his colleagues were on official duty.
According to him; “It is quite unfortunate that such an incident happened and as a community, we are strongly against such incident. The community is not happy concerning what happened and we are not going to leave any stone unturn to find out those that are involved in such heinous crime.
The President General said investigation by the police is still on going and they are yet to come out to state exactly those that were involved. He noted that, it was sad to say that it was person/persons from Akwukwu-Igbo community that committed the crime.
“We cannot categorically say that it was Akwukwu people because investigation is still going on, and it is wrong for anybody to point finger at Akwukwu people till the police come out with their report after investigation”.
Chief Iwegbu noted that the incident happened close to Otulu which is within the jurisdiction of the Akwukwu Police division and though the area is Akwukwu-Igbo land, the story that it was Akwukwu-Igbo people that committed the crime could not be correct.
“My community does not harbour such individuals and will not habour such. We are ready to cooperate with the police to find out who those people are, and if it turns out that they are from Akwukwu, we are not going to cover them up, we will let the whole world know. Because today, we are talking about the police, who knows who will be next? Chief Iwegbu stated.
Chief Iwegbu appeal to the police not be to deterred from carrying out their duties. He urge them to be on their feet and continue to do their policing, assuring that, the community will give its maximum cooperation to make them do their job more effectively.
“We are ready to partner with the police in any form or way to make sure that the lives of police officers and that of Akwukwu indigenes are well protected. We will not and never condole such an act of criminality in our community”. Chief Iwegbu stated.
