The Chairman of Ndokwa West LGA, Chief Goddey Obi-Nzete has urged the management and workers of the council to strive to identify their purpose in life as it was a prerequisite for effective leadership.
The council Boss gave the advise in Kwale while declaring open ‘A One Day Seminar’ with the theme; “Effective Leadership and Team Building” organised by the council in collaboration with Eka Consult.
Leadership, according to Nzete is multivated through inspiration, which begins with identifying one purpose in life.
Admonishing the stakeholders to show leadership in the discharge of their duties, the chairman said; “It gives me great pleasure to see all of you seated today. When I assume office, I deemed it fit and necessary to bring resource persons down here rather than travelling far for lectures such as this.
“The lectures are anchored on leadership and at the end we will learn what it takes to be good and effective leaders. Leaders that have influence not seeking followership.”
According to him, leaders must have deep convictions laced with passion, adding that without passion there won’t be interest in something.
“Passion is discovering not what to live for but what to die for. As a manager or business man you must show leadership hence you cannot discharge your duties effectively.” He added.
A guest lecturer, Seji Omoroje from the Sociology and Criminology department, University of Delta, Agbor while taking the participants on; “Effective Leadership and Team Building” described leadership as self development.
He pointed out that effective leaders have good communication skills, vision, empathy, accountable and the spirit of gratitude.
On the contrary, he noted that terrible leaders, fails to inform their followers adequately and hardly clarify issues.
“Good leaders have open minded, creative, responsible, dependable, patient and tenacious. A true leader takes responsibilities from their followers to enable them to achieve set goals.”
Another guest lecturer, Chuks Justus Iwegbu, also from the UNIDEL, Agbor whose lecture was; “Leadership and the Task of Building Effective Teamwork for Public and Private Sector Efficiency” commended Chief Nzete for his initiative and sponsorship of the seminar.
According to him, achieving leadership effectiveness and optimal productivity in any organisation there must be concepts such as; communication, trust, transparency, leadership and teamwork.
“Strong communication, particularly from managers, enables them to better instruct and inform employees on particular tasks, goals and general performance expectations while trust enable employees expect from their bosses to have confidence and treat them fairly.
“Transparency expands relationships, strengthens innovation. Leadership and teamwork eliminates toxic work culture and help employees to remain focused on the organisational goals.” He stated.
