Delta Education Commissioner Lauds NILDS For Organising School Quiz Competition

Delta State Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu has commended the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) for organising quiz competition for public and private schools with a view to enhancing their awareness on legislative and other processes of governance.

Ezewu gave the commendation in her office in Asaba when the officials of the Institute led by its team leader, Alh. Moshood Amina paid her an advocacy visit.

She said that the initiative to test them on their knowledge of the workings of the government especially legislative businesses would go a long way towards encouraging the spirit of academic competition among students, adding that the gesture was a welcome development.

Ezewu, who recalled that remedial institutes were established in order to serve as a platform for students who could not pass their first seating in School Certificate Examinations but to use such remedial institutes to prepare them for examination.

In his remarks, the leader of the delegation, Alh. Moshood Amina who is an Assistant Director in the Institute said that by 2018 through Act of Parliament the scope of the institute became wide with democratic process, election monitoring, legislative duties and training.

He said that the institute had the capacity to award degree and diploma certificates in legislative drafting , legislative studies, election and party management, stressing that drafting was a specialised area even he noted that most of the courses the institute run were specialised.

Alh. Amina said that they were in the state to sensitise stakeholders of the Ministry on the need for Delta to participate in the quiz competition just as he stated that Prof. Chike Edozien secretariat met international standards and commended Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for building the edifice for civil servants in the state.

Speaking on the methodology for participation in the quiz competition, the Head of Technical Team , Dr. Asemota Omorogbe Joseph said that the essence of the competition was to create awareness about the role of legislature , saying that leadership had remained one of problems of Nigeria.

He stated that the competition would start from senatorial districts where schools would compete , adding that after the senatorial level the representative of the state would compete at the geo political level while the winner of the geo political zone would proceed to Abuja to slug it out with the winners of other six geo political zones and the FCT.
