World Menstrual Day: Health Expert, Mrs Idawene Advotes Proper Menstrual Hygiene

 

As the world menstrual day is celebrated today, Mrs Faith Idawene, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of  Oke Idawene Coundation has called on parents, teachers, wards, guardians and members of the society to work in synergy for the eradication of poor menstrual hygiene.

Mrs Idawene who made this call in a statement said Menstrual Hygiene Day is an annual awareness day celebrated on May 28th every year to highlights the importance of good menstural hygiene management at a global stage.

She noted that world menstrual day was initiated by a German-based Non-governmental Organisations NGO ‘Wash United’ in 2013 and observed for the first time in 2014, pointing out that on any given day more than 300 million women worldwide are mensurating in total with an estimated 500 million lacking access to menstrual products especially in rural part of the world.

“That’s why the Oke Idawene Foundation has come up with a program, Girl Child Initiative Mission, every girl child needs a pad in eradication of poor mensural hygiene in promoting healthy living the need for menstrual hygiene, personal hygiene, menstural cycle in prevention of vaginal infections diseases such as urinary tract infections which can result in future infertility and birth complications”.

Mrs Idawene said neglecting to wash hands after changing menstrual products can spread infection such as hepatitis B and thrush.

“Therefore building the capacity of guidance and counsellors to support girls on menstural hygiene management, protecting their dignity by the provision of sanitary pads and advocacy to school management to improve wash facilities and ensure girls stay in school to complete their cycle of education.

The Health Experts described period poverty as the period of difficulty when girls cannot affords menstrual products during menstruation.
