In its avowed commitment towards academic excellence and infrastructural revolution in public primary schools in Delta State, the State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, Tuesday, inaugurated a 7 member State Executive of School Based Management Committee, SBMC.
The inauguration was performed by the Executive Chairman of the Board, Hon Chief Samuel Oghenevwogaga Mariere, at the SUBEB headquarters in Asaba, the state capital.
The Committee has Avenuevurhasue Sunday Okpare as the State Chairman, Hillary Chukwudi Ofuani, State Secretary, Oghale Ezekiel Ohore, State Treasurer and the Director for Social Mobilization, Subeb, Felix Egwujovwo, as Supervisor.
Others include Beatrice E. E. Okoro, NUT, Emmanuel EtaOghene, AOPSHON and Oliver Ogheneovo Isiayei, Subeb Desk officer as members.
In his remarks, Executive Chairman, Subeb, Delta State, Hon Samuel Mariere, said the School Based Management Committee, SBMC, is an initiative aim at promoting academic excellence and infrastructural growths in public schools, which is in line with the development vision of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Mariere further disclosed that the SBMC is a national project of the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, designed to handover all public primary and basic schools in the 36 states and the FCT back to the people in the areas where the schools are located for ownership, care and protection.
According to the Delta Subeb Chairman, the aim is to deliver quality education to all learners, help in mopping up children of school age from the streets to embrace education and protecting school property from devious activities of vandals.
He added that the Committee would be inaugurated at the local government level in a later date, to help drive the process in the grassroots.
“What we are doing now is inauguration of the State Executive of the School Based Management Committee. At a later date, we will inaugurate the Committee at local government levels. The State Executive is therefore expected to before the end of the year ensure that all public primary schools in the state have their respective committees in place.
“The aim is to take ownership of the schools, provide the needed verve to pilot academic development, infrastructural revolutions and champion the drive for greater accomplishments in public schools across the state”, Mariere said.
The Subeb Boss, flanked by the three Members of the Board, Chukwuemeka Uwadia, Onome Akpoherhe, and Josephine Edheren as well as the Permanent Secretary, Byron Unini and Special Assistant to the Executive Chairman, Justice Iyasere, charged the Committee to demonstrate professionalism in the task before them.
“This State Executive of SBMC is carefully selected to ensure that the goals of His Excellency, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori in this regard are achieved. I therefore charge members to demonstrate the needed commitment to ensure that public schools in the state take their pride of place by helping the schools authority to manage issues, pursue physical development, enforce discipline and return the schools to their glorious past when public schools were the delight of every parents instead of spending their hard-earned money in private schools with less quality teachers and basic infrastructures”. Hon Mariere stressed.
He disclosed that the inaugurated SBMC State Executive were drawn from critical stakeholders in the primary and basic education sub sector, including school heads, community leaders, NUT and AOPSHON, amongst others.
Hon Mariere assured that the Board is determined to provide the Committee the needed support and encouragement to perform their duties, provided they are committed and determined to making the difference.
Responding the Chairman of SBMC, Chief Sunday Okpare, thanked the Board for the confidence reposed in them, promising to put in their best to ensure they deliver on the mandate.
He promised to midwife inauguration of the SBMC in all schools across the state before the end of the year as directed by the Executive Chairman of the Board, Hon Samuel Mariere.
