Capacity Building: SUBEB, UBEC to Strengthen School Management with Good Governance Skills

The Delta State Universal Basic Education Board SUBEB, in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC and the Delta State Government are organizing a three-day capacity-building workshop for State School-Based Management Committee, SBMC Executives and Desk Officers across the 25 Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs) in the state.

The workshop with the theme “Governance, Finance, and Planning,” is aim to strengthen the capacity of community-based school management structures to effectively support the development of public primary education sub sector in the state.

A statement by the Executive Chairman, SUBEB, Delta State, the training will also involve SBMC LGEA Chairmen and Secretaries and will focus on improving leadership, financial management, and strategic planning skills among participants.

Mariere disclosed that the School-Based Management system is an initiative of the Universal Basic Education Commission designed to promote community participation in the management and development of public schools.

“At the centre of the initiative is the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC), which provides support to communities in executing, safeguarding, and sustaining projects and facilities provided by the government in public primary schools”.

The Executive Chairman explained that the training is intended to equip SBMC members with practical skills to plan, manage, and protect school projects and resources.

“The training is designed to strengthen community ownership of schools, promote accountability, and ensure the proper use of government-provided facilities in public primary schools,” he said.

The Subeb Boss further noted that the programme will help boost children’s enrollment and attendance while empowering communities to contribute actively to improving and sustaining quality basic education in their localities.

“The capacity-building workshop will also empower community stakeholders with the knowledge and tools required to support school development initiatives and improve learning outcomes for pupils”.

Hon Mariere added that the training which is residential and strictly by invitation, is scheduled to hold from Tuesday, March 17 to Thursday, March 19, 2026, beginning at 8:00 a.m. daily at Gares Place Hotel, located along Ughelli/Patani Road, beside AJ Eatery, Ughelli in Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state.
