Press Release
Office of the Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary has been inundated with complaints from the public about a school principal unilaterally imposing on Junior Secondary School students whose examinations start today to pay a certain amount of money before their exams numbers are given them.
This became necessary following a false peddling information by a Facebook post by one faceless “Okpe Aproko” who said Principal of Orerokpe Secondary Mr Okpe using exam officers has been coarsing students to pay #4,500 before they are given their exam numbers.
By virtue of the Universal Basic Education, UBE, Act, Education at the Basic Education Level is FREE. And in Delta State that provision is also extended to Senior Secondary level with the resultant effect being that Basic and Secondary Education (primary, junior and secondary) in Delta State is and still remains free.
“I have conducted a preliminary investigation into the matter, and the students are only to pay for their practicals that they are met to use for their examinations not as wrongly speculated on the social media.
The Commissioner however reiterated that the present administration in the state had zero tolerance for illegal levies.
Parents are further encouraged to report any erring school administrators to the appropriate authorities for necessary action.
Meanwhile, principals and head teachers involved in any ignoble act are warned to retrace their steps and turn a new leaf, as any of them found to be collecting any fee from pupils, other than the approved levies, would be sanctioned appropriately.
The commissioner seized the opportunity to list the approved levies for public primary and secondary schools in the state to include PTA
