The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria has promised to deepen collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Interior on internal security, critical reforms, and citizen service delivery across the 36 states of the federation.
Chairman of the Conference, Rt Hon Emomotimi Dennis Guwor made the promise when he led a delegation of Speakers of State Houses of Assembly on a courtesy visit to the Honourable Minister of Interior, Rt Hon Olujimi Oyetunde Tunji-Ojo, at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja.
Guwor who is the Speaker Delta State Assembly, said the engagement was aimed at bridging the gap between federal internal policies and state-level legislative action.
He noted that state Houses of Assembly play a critical role in domesticating laws and oversight that affect areas under the Ministry’s mandate.
“We had a fruitful discussion on how state legislatures can better interface with the Ministry to support federal initiatives at the grassroots”, Guwor stated on his official Facebook handle.
The Conference of Speakers Chairman, stressed the need for more concerted efforts that would strengthen national security to promote peace, stability and prosperity in Nigeria.
“Our shared goal is national development, peace, and improved welfare for Nigerians”, he said.
Guwor emphasized that the visit is centered on deepening legislative-federal partnership in areas under the Ministry’s purview.
The Interior Affairs Minister, Rt Hon. Tunji-Ojo welcomed the initiative and commended the Conference of Speakers for the visit and its proactive engagement.
Tunji-Ojo assured the delegation of the Ministry’s openness to sustained dialogue, data and information sharing and joint oversight to federal facilities in the states.
Both parties agreed to establish formal channels of collaboration to support citizen-centric programmes across the country.
The meeting ended on a cordial note as both sides reaffirmed commitment to constitutional democracy and intergovernmental cooperation.
