The Vice Chairman of Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, Olorogun Daniel Ighedo has said that the move by some elements to stop the Governorship ambition of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori was because he do not belong to what he referred to as “Class of ’99”.
In a Press Statement made available to newsmen in Asaba on Wednesday , August 3rd, 2022, the Uvwie Local Government Area Vice Chairman, averred that the Wednesday, May 25th, 2022 gubernatorial primaries held in the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba was clearly won by the Speaker.
According to the Statement; ” The anger of some elements in Delta State against the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly and State PDP Governorship Candidate , Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori who clearly won the Governorship Primary on Wednesday, May 25th, 2022 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba is not because he is not qualified or morally bankrupt to be Delta State Governor, but it is because he do not belong to the Class of “99”.
“The “Inside Niger Delta” programme aired on AIT at 9pm on Monday, August 1st, 2022, where his classmates spoke on his Certifications has laid to rest the unfounded claims by his distractors that he never went to school. The Speaker is well educated and capable of piloting the affairs of the State if elected Governor”, he said.
“They know that the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly and National Deputy Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of state legislatures of Nigeria, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori represents the New Generation of PDP members (The Grand Children and Great Grand Children) of the family, whom they do not want to taste leadership. He equally represents the young generation of Deltans and these young Deltans are Sheriffied and solidly behind the Speaker in his aspiration “, he added.
The Uvwie Local Government Area Vice Chairman also said that; “They believe that with Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori as Governor, the new generation PDP members and young generation of Deltans that they have so reduced to living a life of penury will be recognized with official roles to positively impact governance in the State. But they like it or not, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori will be Governor of Delta State in 2023 because the support for him by Deltans is overwhelming. The acceptance of the Speaker both within State and outside the state is very impressive and these elements who are against his governorship aspiration should allow the will of the people to prevail for the betterment of Delta State”.
Olorogun Ighedo posited that there was no need for the legal battles against the State PDP Governorship Candidate, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, describing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as one big family and advised that PDP members should work for the success of the party in the 2023 governorship Election in the State.
