The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, has lauded members for the speedy passage of two amendment bills aimed at strengthening the state judiciary.
Rt. Hon. Guwor gave the commendation on Wednesday at plenary, immediately after the Third Reading and passage of the Delta State High Court (Amendment) Bill, and the Delta State Customary Court of Appeal (Amendment) Bill.
The Speaker said the passage of the bills underscores the 8th Assembly’s commitment to supporting the judicial arm of government and ensuring timely access to justice for Deltans.
Giving the background to the High Court Amendment Bill, Guwor explained that the principal law was amended to increase the statutory number of Judges of the Delta State High Court from 46 to 50 in order to address rising caseloads.
“Distinguished colleagues, I thank all of you for the successful passage of the Delta State High Court (Amendment) Bill, 2026 (HB. 48). It is my strong belief that this increase will reduce the pressure of caseloads on our Judges and ultimately enhance the effective administration of Justice in our dear State”, he said.
On the Customary Court of Appeal Amendment Bill, the Speaker noted that the amendment was designed to strengthen the structure and operations of the court for faster and more efficient dispensation of justice.
“I am indeed grateful to all of you for the successful passage of the Delta State Customary Court of Appeal (Amendment) Bill, 2026 (HB. 49). This amendment will enhance justice delivery in the Customary Court of Appeal system. Thank you for the quick passage of this Bill,” he stated.
Guwor further commended the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for forwarding the two Executive Bills to the House, describing the initiative as timely and necessary for repositioning the justice sector.
According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, the Speaker said the proposed laws reflect government’s commitment to equipping courts with adequate manpower and structure to meet the growing demand for justice by Deltans.
Rt. Hon. Guwor lauded the synergy between the executive and legislative arms, noting that it has continued to yield people-oriented laws.
He reassured that the 8th Assembly remains committed to enacting laws that will decongest court dockets and guarantee speedy dispensation of cases in the state.
With the passage, both bills will now be transmitted to Governor Oborevwori for assent.
