President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, Esq., FNSE, has congratulated Nigeria’s women’s tennis team following their historic promotion to the Billie Jean King Cup Europe/Africa Zone Group II, describing the achievement as another defining moment in the resurgence of Nigerian tennis.
The latest success comes just months after Nigeria’s men’s team earned promotion to the Davis Cup World Group II, making 2026 a landmark year for Nigerian tennis.
Reacting to the feat, Ochei praised the players and coaching crew for their dedication and fighting spirit.
“I heartily congratulate our exceptional women athletes and the technical crew on this remarkable achievement. Your resilience, discipline, teamwork and determination have once again made Nigeria proud. You have demonstrated that with hard work and belief, Nigerian tennis can compete and succeed on the global stage.”
The NTF President described the double promotion of both the men’s and women’s teams in the same year as a testament to the Federation’s strategic vision and commitment to excellence.
“The promotion of both our Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup teams in the same year is unprecedented for Nigerian tennis. It reflects the progress we are making and strengthens our resolve to continue investing in player development and grassroots tennis.”
Ochei also expressed profound appreciation to the National Sports Commission (NSC) under the leadership of Chairman, Malam Shehu Dikko, and Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, for their unwavering support towards the growth of tennis.
“I sincerely thank the National Sports Commission for believing in our vision and providing the support that has made these achievements possible. The leadership of Malam Shehu Dikko and Hon. Bukola Olopade has created an enabling environment for our athletes to excel.”
He further commended members of the Nigeria Tennis Federation Board for their unity, dedication and shared commitment to repositioning the sport.
“I equally appreciate my colleagues on the NTF Board for their commitment, sacrifice and collective efforts. These achievements belong to every stakeholder who has worked tirelessly to restore Nigeria’s place among the leading tennis nations in Africa.”
Ochei reaffirmed the Federation’s determination to build on the historic achievements and continue raising the standard of Nigerian tennis at continental and global levels.
