Nigeria’s women’s tennis team has secured a historic promotion to the Billie Jean King Cup Europe/Africa Zone Group II after defeating host nation Botswana 2-1 in the promotional play-off in Gaborone.
Nigeria took control of the tie when the in-form Success Ogunjobi defeated Botswana’s Chelsea Chakanyuka 6-2, 6-4 in the opening singles match.
The Nigerian squad of Etoro Bassey, Success Ogunjobi, Khadijat Mohammed and Oyinlomo Quadre, under coach Rotimi Akinloye, sealed the decisive victory to earn promotion to the higher division.
The achievement completes a remarkable year for Nigerian tennis, following the men’s team’s promotion to the Davis Cup World Group II earlier in 2026.
With both national teams earning promotion in the same year, Nigeria has recorded one of its greatest achievements in international tennis.
