WORKERS’ DAY: CONFERENCE OF SPEAKERS’ CHAIRMAN URGES DIALOGUE, REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO LABOUR LAWS

The Chairman, Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria and Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, has congratulated Nigerian workers, particularly the workforce in Delta State, as they join their counterparts across the globe to mark the 2026 International Workers’ Day.

In a goodwill message issued in Asaba by his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, the Speaker described workers as the bedrock of nation-building and the driving force behind the economic, social, and democratic progress of Nigeria.

Speaking in his capacity as Chairman of the Conference of Speakers, Rt. Hon. Guwor commended Nigerian workers for their patriotism and commitment despite prevailing challenges.

He noted that State Houses of Assembly across the federation remain committed to labour-friendly legislation, improved welfare, and institutional reforms that guarantee decent work, fair wages, and safe working conditions for all Nigerian workers.

“On behalf of my colleague Speakers in the 36 States, I reaffirm our collective resolve to use the instrument of law-making to protect the rights of workers, strengthen industrial harmony, and support policies that create jobs and expand opportunities for our people.

“Together we celebrate dignity, resilience, and sacrifice. Together we honour men and women whose hands, minds, and courage keep our schools running, hospitals functioning, roads built, laws implemented, and democracy alive,” the Chairman said.

Turning to Delta State, Rt. Hon. Guwor paid special tribute to the State’s workforce, describing them as “loyal, diligent, and central to the successful implementation of the policies and programmes of the state government, as encapsulated in his MORE Agenda of His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

The Speaker noted that the synergy between the Executive and the Legislature in the State has ensured effective legislative backing for welfare packages targeted at the State workforce.

Guwor urged workers to remain steadfast and continue to uphold professionalism, integrity, and productivity, assuring that the State House of Assembly under his leadership will sustain robust oversight to ensure that appropriations for workers’ welfare are fully implemented.

“Delta workers have shown uncommon dedication. From the Assembly Complex to every MDA, your contributions are powering the Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security that define this administration.

“On this May Day, I salute your sacrifices. We will not take your partnership for granted. Together with His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, we will continue to prioritize your welfare because a motivated workforce is the surest guarantee for a greater Delta,” the Speaker added.

Rt. Hon. Guwor called on labour leaders to deepen dialogue with government at all levels, stressing that industrial peace is critical for sustainable development.

“As Chairman, Conference of Speakers, I appeal to organized labour to keep the doors of engagement open. The legislature remains your partner in progress. Let us build together — not in conflict, but in common purpose,” he stressed.

The Speaker wished all Nigerian workers a peaceful and rewarding Workers’ Day celebration.
